Regulations


ED 4.00           The Bachelor of Education (Secondary-Teaching) degree programme is intended for prospective teachers in the Humanities and Social Science school subjects. It is offered as a first degree in the Department of Language and Social Education, Faculty of Education.

Entrance Requirements:

ED 4.01           The normal minimum entrance requirements shall be:

(i)         At least second class pass in the Secondary Teacher’s Certificate (STC) of the NTTC, with relevant specialisation.

(ii)                 At least a Cambridge Overseas School Certificate in the 1st and 2nd division, with a credit in English Language. A credit in Mathematics will also be required for certain courses in the Faculty of Social Science.

(iii)                Diploma Education (Secondary Teaching)

(iv)               Other equivalent qualifications and experience as approved by Senate.

ED 4.02           In the case of Diploma in Education (Secondary-Teaching), the Diploma courses previously taken may not be credited towards the degree requirements for the candidates admitted into B. Ed. (Secondary-Teaching) degree programme.

Degree Structure:

ED 4.03           The programme shall normally be of four years duration commencing at Year I.

ED 4.04           The curriculum shall normally be as follows:

Year 1:             Take and pass at least 36 credit hours as follows:-

EDF111-6

CSS100-8-12

CLOO1- 2

M001-3 and ST151-3 OR M103-4 and M104-4

6 to 9 Credit Hours of Electives.

At least 3 Credit Hours in each of the two (2) teaching subjects offered by the Faculties of Humanities and/or Social Sciences.

Year II:            Take and Pass:

            12-18 credit hours of Educational Foundation Courses

            12-18 credit hours of Teaching Subject one

            12-18 credit hours of Teaching Subject two

            3 to 6 Credit Hours of Electives

Year III:           Take and Pass:

            12-18 credit hours of Teaching Subject one

            12-18 credit hours of Teaching Subject two

            3 to 6 Credit Hours of Electives

Year IV:           Take and Pass :

            6 credit hours of Curriculum Studies one

            6 credit hours of Curriculum Studies Two

            6 credit hours of Curriculum Studies one Teaching Practice

            6 credit hours of Curriculum Studies Two Teaching Practice

            12 to 18 Credit Hours of Electives offered in the 1st semester

Assessment and Examinations:

ED 4.05           The assessment of each student’s performance shall be as governed by the general regulations of the University.

ED 4.06           The supplementing of courses shall be in accordance with the special regulations of the Faculty of Education. A student shall normally be allowed to supplement a maximum of 16 Credit Hours in any given year.

Progression from one year of Study to the other

(i)                   To proceed from Year I to Year II student should pass two teaching subjects and obtain an OWM of at least 50.

(ii)                 To proceed from Year II to Year III and Year III to Year IV, the student should take 36 credit hours in each year; obtain a minimum OWM of at least 50% and not have to carry forward more than 12 credit hours.

Transfers

A student may transfer into the B. Ed programme to repeat the year if she/he has 2 teaching subjects but, has failed the year. She/he may transfer into the proceed year if she/he has 2 teaching subjects and the OWM of at least 50.

Award of The B. Ed. Degree:

ED 4.07           At the conclusion of the programme a student who has passed all required courses and teaching practice shall qualify for the award of the B. Ed. degree (secondary), classified on the basis of the OWM as given in the general regulations of the University.

ED 4.08           The fail-and-repeat and the fail-and-discontinued are procedures governed by the general regulations of the University.

ED 4.09           The Interpretation on these regulations is as stated in the special regulations of the Faculty of Education.

 

B.Ed. Degree in Primary Education

I.          Rationale

A lot of Basotho Primary teachers are hankering for upgrading their academic and professional growth through well planned programmes at their level.  So far, such programmes, though they are overdue, have not been planned and offered as yet.  The B.Ed Degree in Primary Education is one of the means taken to address the primary teacher’s desire in Lesotho, to upgrade themselves both academically and professionally. 

II.        Objectives of the Programme

The Bachelor of Education (Primary) Degree programme is offered in the Faculty of Education as a first degree programme for certified teachers.

The following are the objectives of the programme:

1.                   To raise the academic and professional competences of primary teachers in Lesotho.

2.                   To motivate primary teachers in their search for personal academic and professional enrichment.

3.                   To equip primary schools in Lesotho with a cadre of teachers able to uplift the quality of education at the primary foundation level.

4.                   To train teachers who will be able to participate comfortably in the planning and implementation of programmes at the primary school level.

5.                   To enable teachers to acquire techniques and/or skills of initiating and producing material for better teaching and learning in order to reinforce qualify education at primary school level.

6.                   To create a strong and confident teachers force who will be models to other teachers in the execution of their work in the schools

III        Programme

The programme will be governed by the regulations of the Faculty of Education, as set for all B.Ed. programme.

DURATION

It shall be a four (4 year programme of full-time study  or a five (5) year part time study.

Entry Requirements

Diploma in Primary Education or Primary Teachers Certificate with a second class pass or an approved equivalent.  Teachers experience will be an added advantage to applicants.
