Regulations
UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE REGULATIONS:
GEO 1.00 Degree Programmes:
The Department offers the following Programmes of Study:
GEO 1.01 Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Humanities:
To enter into geography programmes in Humanities and Social Sciences, students must pass Common First Year and the first year human geography course.
1. a) A programme of study leading to a B.A single major in Geography.
b) A programme of study leading to a double major (FSS/FOH) in Human Geography with anyone of the following subjects:
i) Sociology
ii) Public Administration
iii) Political Science
iv) Economics
v) Demography
vi) Statistics
vii) Development Studies
viii) History.
c) A programme of study leading to a B.A. degree in Urban and Regional Planning (B.A. URP) in the Faculty of Social Sciences.
2. For all the programmes of study in GEO 1.01 above, all core courses prescribed in a particular academic year must be taken and passed with a final grade of at least 50% for a student to proceed into a subsequent year of study and/or graduate after year IV.
GEO 1.02 Faculty of Science and Technology:
To enter into geography programmes in FOST, students must satisfy FOST 6.03 and obtain a minimum of an average of E in mathematics.
1. a) A programme of study leading to a B.Sc single Major in Geography
b) A programme of study leading to a double major in Physical Geography with any one of the following:
Chemistry
Biology
Physics
c) A programme to leading to a B.Sc. in Environmental Science
2. To proceed from Year II to Year III in Physical Geography, a student should obtain at least 50% in PG243 and in any two other Year II Physical Geography (PG) courses.
3. To proceed from Year III to Year IV a student should obtain at least 50% in PG346 and in any two other Year III Physical Geography (PG) courses.
4. To graduate, a student should
a) satisfy 1., 2., and 3. above and
b) obtain at least 50% in PG465 and in at least two other Year Four Physical Geography (PG) courses.
c) satisfy all other relevant regulations of the Faculty of Science and Technology.
GEO 2.00 Final Year Projects:
GEO 2.01 Projects are compulsory to single majors students and URP students only. Student projects start with a fieldwork data collection beginning the first day of lectures during the fourth year of study. Projects will have 3 hours a week of time-tabled supervision and data processing throughout year.
GEO 2.02 The last day of handing in typed and bound Geography projects shall be the first day of May final examinations. Projects handed in later than the said date shall not be considered. However, the Department may at its discretion and in exceptional cases and, where appropriate, consider projects for late submission.
GEO 3.00 Unless otherwise stated, all courses offered by the department are assessed on the basis of a ratio of course work to final examination of 1:1.
GEO 4.00 Relevant Faculty (FOST, FOH, FSS, FED) regulations governing supplementaries, repeat of failed courses, repeat of failed years, discontinuation and/or exclusion from the Faculty and/or University will be applicable to both single and double major students in the department.
GEO 5.00 The Department reserves the right to offer or not to offer an optional course during any particular year.

GEO 6.02 Single Major in Geography:
To enter into a Single Major in Geography from Year I, a student must obtain an OWM of at least 60.
GEO 6.03 Environmental Science Regulations
ES 1.00 In compliance with AR 4.05, all Environmental Science courses are numbered in the following manner:
a) The letters ES stand for Environmental Science
b) The first digit stands for the year in which the course is normally offered.
c) The second and third digits form a number distinguishing one course from the other within the particular subject and year of study
d) The fourth digit indicates the number of credit hours which this course represents.
ES 2.00 Entrance, proceed and graduation requirements:
1. In addition to the fulfilment of GEO.2.00, to enter the Environmental Science Programme, a student must have passed biology and chemistry in the first year.
2. In the second year, all courses are compulsory.
3. To proceed from Year II to Year III in Environmental Science, a student should obtain at least 50% in ES 221, PG 243 and PG 244 and satisfy Faculty regulations.
4 To proceed from Year III to Year IV a student must obtain at least 50% in ES 333 and ES 332 and any two other Year III courses, and satisfy Faculty regulations.
5. To graduate, a student should
a) Satisfy 1 to 4 above and
b) Obtain at least 50% in three Year Four Environmental Science (ES) courses including ES 441 and ES 432.
c) Satisfy all other relevant regulations of the Faculty of Science and Technology.
ES 3.00 Unless otherwise stated, all courses offered by the Department are assessed on the basis of a ratio of course work to final examination of 1:1.
ES 4.00 Relevant Faculty regulations governing supplementaries, repeat of failed courses, repeat of failed years, discontinuation and/or exclusion from the Faculty and/or University will be applicable.
ES 5.00 The Department reserves the right to offer or not to offer an optional course during any particular year.

GRADUATE DEGREE REGULATIONS
GEO 8.00 Preamble:
GEO 8.01 The Department of Geography offers 2 graduate programmes in the field of Physical Geography viz:
i) B.Sc Honours
ii) M.Sc.
GEO 9.00 Objectives:
GEO 9.01 There are three main objectives to the programmes:
i) To further develop the intellectual ability, communication and technical skills of the individual
ii) To increase understanding, awareness and insight of the issues and problems of the natural environment at global and regional scales and the role Physical Geography can play in their solution.
iii) To contribute to the stronger technical capacity
GEO 10.00 Admission Requirements:
GEO 10.01 a) The basic entry requirement for the B.Sc Honours Programme is a B.Sc degree from NUL (or equivalent) of at least a 2(ii) level with a minimum overall grade of C in Physical Geography courses taken in Year III and Year IV.
b) In addition, to pursue the Meteorology and Hydrology subject components of the programme, a pass in the following Physics courses is required:
P222 Thermodynamics I
P245 Mathematical Physics I
GEO 10.02 The entry requirement for the M.Sc. programme is a B.Sc. Honours from NUL (or equivalent) of at least 2(i) level.
GEO 11.00 B.Sc. Honours Programme:
GEO 11.01 The programme is of 1 year duration during which the student will pursue taught courses in two chosen subject components plus an advanced methods course.
Initially, components in Meteorology and Hydrology will be offered each with three courses.
GEO 11.02 The degree structure is as follows:
1. Advanced Methods Course:
PG561-6 Introduction to Remote Sensing and GIS
2. Meteorology:
PG562-6 Advanced Theoretical Meteorology
PG563-6 Environmental Meteorology
PG534-3 Techniques in Meteorology
3. Hydrology:
PG565-6 Advanced Surface and Subsurface Hydrology
PG566-6 Open Channel Flow and Storage Yield Analysis
PG537-3 Techniques in Hydrology
GEO 11.03 The two specialist techniques courses (PG 534 and PG 537) will be offered in separate semesters making a total for the candidate of 18 credit hours per semester.
GEO 11.04 Each (honours) course will have a tutor assigned to it by the department for the organisation of teaching and assessment. The courses will be assessed by course work (essays, reports, practicals, tests and seminar presentation) and a terminal examination combined in the ratio 50 : 50.
GEO 12.00 M.Sc. Programme:
GEO 12.01 The programme is of 1 year duration during which time the candidate will pursue a dissertation in one of the subject components chosen in the B.Sc. Honours programme viz: PG 601-Dissertation.
GEO 12.02 The candidate will be assigned a supervisor in the department and a dissertation committee comprising of the supervisor (who will also be the chair) plus two other full time members of academic staff of which at least one will be from the department. The role of the dissertation committee will be to judge the progress of the student in the writing of the dissertation.
GEO 12.03 The M.Sc. candidate must give at least three months notice of the intention to submit the dissertation in writing to the supervisor. The dissertation should then be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on the last day of May Examinations. The candidate will then be required to attend an oral examination by a panel of examiners arranged by the supervisor. The panel will consist of the dissertation committee, the head of the department (who will act as chair) plus a representative from the faculty of postgraduate studies and (if possible) an external examiner assigned by the department.
GEO 12.04 The dissertation is assessed to be either satisfactory or unsatisfactory by consensus. If unsatisfactory, the student may re-submit within four months for re-examination with or without an oral. If the dissertation is still unsatisfactory or if there is no re-submission the student fails.
GEO 12.05 If the dissertation is not submitted by the last day of May examinations, then the student fails unless an extension had been granted by the department.
