Coordinator (Computer Science): Mr. M.N.Z. Mphaka
Secretary: Mrs. M. Marite
Introduction
The department offers degree programmes in the disciplines of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science leading into B.Sc. Double Major, B.Sc. Single Major, B.Sc. Honours, and BEng degrees. It also runs postgraduate degree and sub-degree programmes either as conversion degrees or as specialization in one of the department’s disciplines or in any inter-disciplinary areas, subject to staffing situations.
The graduates of the department have career opportunities in the following areas:
Mathematics: Mathematics graduates can proceed to specialise in different branches of mathematics such as Applied Mathematics, Engineering Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, Logic, Graph Theory, Complexity Analysis of Algorithms, Mathematics of Finance and Actuarial Sciences.
Statistics: Statistics graduates will have three main concentration areas:
Operations Research, whose general objective is to have a graduate of the Program with ability to formulate models for optimisation problems in various social-economic activities and establish their optimal solutions.
Production Statistics, whose general objective is to have a graduate of the Program with ability to compile data, analyse data, present results, and advise on policy and issues for optimal decisions in the production sector.
Social Statistics, whose general objective is to have a graduate of the Program with ability to compile data, analyse data, present results, and advise on policy and issues for optimal decisions in the service sector.
The Computer Sciences Section offers single major and/or professional degree programmes in the following areas:style="font-size: smal
-
B.Eng in Computer Systems and Networks: The application of theories and principles of Computing, Mathematics, Science and Engineering to solve technical problems through the design of hardware, software and networks.
-
BSc in Computer Science: The study of the machine itself and its use as a tool in various disciplines.
-
BSc in Information Systems: The application of information technology to organizational and managerial needs.
These programmes are offered in addition to double major general BSc degree in Computer Science with other
science subjects, especially with Mathematics, physics and Statistics. The department also offers computer awareness
and literacy courses; CS1301 and CS2301. Currently CS2301 is offered to non-computer science students in the Faculty
of Science, and CS1301 is offered to the rest of the students in other faculties.
