FOHS 1.00 Preamble
These regulations should be read in conjunction with the general academic regulations of the National University of Lesotho.
FOHS 2.00 Programmes in The Faculty of Health Sciences
The Faculty of Health Sciences offers the following degrees:
Degrees with a duration of Three years
Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc) in Community Health Nursing (Completion Programme)
Advanced Medical-Surgical Nursing
Primary Health Care
Degrees with a duration of Four years
Bachelor of Science in Nutrition (BSc Nutr)
Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health (BSc)
Degrees with a duration of Five years
Bachelor of Science in General Nursing and Midwifery (BScN) (Generic Programme)
Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm)
FOHS 3.00 Entry Requirements
FOHS 3.01 entry requirements for BSc Nursing, BSc Nutrition, B. Pharmacy and BSc Environmental Health are as for Common First Year in the Faculty of Science and Technology.
FOHS 3.02 Candidates who meet any of the under-mentioned requirements will be considered for entry into Level 200 of the appropriate degree program they are applying for. ( ie. programs in Nursing, Pharmacy, Nutrition and Environmental Health).
Candidates who hold a Diploma in Nutrition Science, Pharmaceutical Technology, Environmental Health,
Pass in International Baccalaureate (IB) examinations in Chemistry and Biology and either Physics or Mathematics with a score of at least 4 at higher level in Biology and Chemistry and 3 in either Mathematics or Physics at the same level.
Pass in Advanced level General Certificate of Education (GCE A-level) examinations with a minimum aggregate of 9 in Chemistry, Biology and either Physics or Mathematics
FOHS 3.03 Students who enter at 2nd year must take and pass Year One courses required by the University.
FOHS 3.04 Students are required to attend all seminars, clinical attachment, prescribed laboratory practicals and field trips.
FOHS 4.00 Research Project
FOHS 4.01 During the final year of study, the candidate shall be required to write a research report of approximately 8000 words on a research project following guidelines approved in advance by the Faculty.
FHOS 4.02 Students must have their research titles and proposals of research projects approved by the Faculty Research Committee at the end of March preceding the academic year in which they will graduate
FOHS 4.03 The final drafts of reports shall be submitted in triplicate by the 1st day of May in the year in which the student seeks to graduate.
FOHS 4.04 No student shall be permitted to graduate unless he/she has presented a satisfactory research report.
FOHS 4.05 A student who fails to submit the research report by the date stipulated in clause FOHS 6.03 may be awarded an “I” for incomplete with the approval of the Head of the Department and Dean of the Faculty. A student may be allowed to submit his/her project as a supplementary examination if submitted on the 1st day of the supplementary examination. If the work is not completed within the extended time, an “F’ grade will be awarded.
FOHS 4.06 Each student will be assigned a research Supervisor from amongst the academic staff of the faculty
FOHS 4.07 Students shall consult with their supervisors in the selection of their projects and the titles. The Supervisor shall supervise all aspects of the research and the writing of the research report.
FOHS 4.08 It shall be the responsibility of the student to: consult his/her supervisor regularly and bring to the attention of the supervisor any problems that may arise in relation to the research project.
FOHS 4.09 A student may within two months of being assigned a supervisor apply to the Head of the Department to have the supervisor changed, provided he/she or she has a valid reason for such a request. in the event of the Head of the Department refusing, the student may apply to the Dean of the Faculty.
FOHS 4.10 No student may, in the absence of any compelling reason be allowed to change a supervisor after the 31st of August of the academic year in which the student seeks to graduate.
FOHS 5.01 Assessment of Students
FOHS 5.01 Normally all courses offered during any given semester will be examined at the end of that semester
FOHS 5.02 All courses that are assigned 3 credit hours and above shall be examined with three-hour papers
FOHS 5.03 Every student is required to pass level 100 courses in Communication and Study Skills and Computer Literacy courses. A student who obtains an overall pass but fails to pass these courses shall be required to repeat them in the proceeding year. A student cannot proceed to the final level of any Program unless and until he/she passes all level 100 courses.
FOHS 5.04 For Programs that do not have practical components to their final examinations, continuous assessment, which may take the form of tests, clinical skills assessment, laboratory reports, term papers and assignments, shall account for 40% of the final grade in each course while the final examination shall account for 60%.
FOHS 5.05 The final assessment for Programmes that have practical component to their final examinations shall be weighted as follows:
Written examination 50%
Final Practical examination 30%
Continuous assessment 20%
FOHS 5.06 Practicum examination for Nursing Programs must be passed with a minimum of a D grade
FOHS 6.00 Conditions for Proceeding
FOHS 6.01 A student will normally proceed to the next year of study provided that he/she has achieved an OWM of 50% in his/her courses and has satisfied all the requirements of the degree as stated in these regulations.
FOHS 6.02 A student who has obtained a yearly weighted mean of 80% in a continuing year of study, shall be classified as Proceed with Distinction provided he/she has satisfied all the requirements to proceed into the subsequent year
FOHS 6.03 A student who has achieved an OWM of 70% but less than 80% in a continuing year of study, shall be classified as Proceed with Merit provided he/she has satisfied all the requirements to proceed into the subsequent year.
FOHS 6.04 A student who has achieved a yearly weighted mean of 50% and above but less than 70% in a continuing year of study shall be classified as Proceed.
FOHS 7.00 Failing a Course:
FHS 7.01 A student shall be deemed to have failed a course if he/she obtains a score of less than 50% in that course. Taking and passing a supplementary examination in the failed course can only redeem a score of 40-49%. A score of less than 40% is not supplement able. A repeat is mandatory.
FOHS 8.00 Supplementary Examinations
FOHS 8.01 In each year of study, a student shall be allowed to supplement not more than 16 credit hours for courses in which he/she obtains between 40 and 49%
FOHS.8.02 Supplementary examination for courses failed during any semester shall be taken at the end of the academic year. in computing the results of the supplementary examination, continuous assessment shall count as in the original assessment.
FOHS 8.03 Irrespective of the score obtained in the supplementary examination, the candidate shall be awarded a maximum of 59% in each course passed in this examination.
FOHS 7.04 No student shall normally be permitted to take supplementary examination more than once in any given course, except that a student retaking a course may be permitted to take a supplementary examination once in the Re-take.
FOHS 9.00 Carry Forward Courses
FOHS 9.01 Courses up to 6 credit hours may be carried forward into the subsequent year of study provided that the total number of credit hours in a year does not exceed 48 credit hours.
FOHS 10.00 Repeat and Discontinue:
FOHS 10.01 A student shall:
Fail and repeat the failed course if the OWM is at least 50% in that year
Fail and repeat the year if OWM is at least 45% in a year.
Fail and discontinue from the School if OWM is between 30-44%.
Fail and discontinue from NUL if OWN is less than 30%
No student will be allowed to repeat a course more than once
FOHS 11.00 Supplementary Under ‘Sit’
FOHS 11.01 A student who for a reason that is acceptable to Senate, does not sit for an examination, shall be permitted to ‘Sit’ for the missed course(s) during the supplementary examination as first sitting.
FOHS 12.00 Degree Classification:
FOHS 12.01 Students’ overall degree classification shall be in accordance with the provision of the University general regulation AR6.12
FOHS 13.00 Protective Clothing
FOHS 13.01 Students shall wear protective clothing as prescribed by the Faculty for Laboratory classes and in all situations where patient/client contact occurs.
FOHS 14.00 Recognition
FOHS 14.01 A testimonial of achievement shall be awarded to any student whose overall weighted mean at the end of the second semester (of any academic year) is over 70%. This is to encourage better academic and professional performance.
FOHS 14.02 Any student who at the end of any academic year achieves an OWM of 80% and above shall be placed on the Dean’s Honours List. This is in addition to the award of Testimonial of achievement.
FOHS 14.03 Special prizes may be awarded to students with best academic and professional performance in certain years of study or courses. However, no student will be considered for a prize unless his/her OWM in 50% of the courses is at least 70% and had not failed in any of the courses in the year.
