Regulations
HIST.1.00
(i) Students taking courses offered by the Department of Historical Studies should carefully look at the Faculty of Humanities General Regulations. The Departmental Special Regulations are meant only to supplement the Faculty Regulations.
(ii) The Department of Historical Studies offers History, Cultural and Heritage Studies, and Environmental History at undergraduate level and Masters in History and the Diploma in Diplomatic Studies at postgraduate level.
HIST.1.01
In the Department of Historical Studies, students can read:
(A) For a Double Major:
The double major should comprise any two programmes under Historical Studies, or one programme under the Department, plus any one programme under any of the following Departments:
English, Development Studies, French, Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies, African Languages and Literature, Geography, Sociology/Social Anthropology, Economics, and Political and Administrative Studies.
(i) History Major
In order to major in History in a B A (Humanities), a student shall take and pass the following courses:
Year 2 Year 3 Year 4
H201-4 H301-4 H403-4
H405-4
Plus a minimum of 16 CHS from the following Year 2 courses: H202-4, H203-4, H204-4, H205-4, H206-4, H207-4, H208-4; 16 CHS from the following Year 3 courses: H302-4, H303-4, H304-4, H305-4, H306-4, H307-4, H308-4, H309-4, H310-4; 12 CHS from of the following Year 4 courses: H401-8, H402-4, H404-4, H406-4, H407-4, H408-4, H409-4, H410-4.
(ii) Cultural and Heritage Studies Major
In order to major in Cultural and Heritage Studies in a B. A. (Humanities)/ B Ed., a student shall take and pass the following courses:
Year 2 Year 3 Year 4
H201-4 H301-4 CHS 401-8
CHS 301-4 CHS 404-4
CHS 306-4
Plus a minimum of 16 CHS from the following Year 2 courses: H202-4, H203-4, H204-4, H205-4, H206-4, H207-4, H208-4; 8 CHS from the following Year 3 courses: CHS302-4, CHS303-4, CHS304-4, CHS305-4, H308-4; 8 CHS from the following Year 4 courses: CHS402-4, CHS403-4, CHS405-4.
(iii) Environmental History Major
In order to major in Environmental History in a B. A. (Humanities)/ B Ed., a student shall take and pass the following courses:

H201-4 H301-4
EH301-4 EH401-8
EH302-4 EH402-4
EH305-4 EH403-4
Plus a minimum of 16 CHS from the following Year 2 courses: H202-4, H203-4, H204-4, H205-4, H206-4, H207-4, H208-4; 4 CHS from the following Year 3 courses: EH303-4, EH304-4, EH306-4; 4 CHS from the following Year 4 courses: EH404-4, EH405-4, EH406-4.
(B) History as a teaching subject in a B. Ed programme
HIST. 1.02
Students from other departments/faculties interested in courses under Historical Studies can take them as options at all levels.
HIST. 1.03
Students from other departments, faculties and institutions who wish to major in Cultural and Heritage Studies and Environmental History could be admitted to Year 3 on the recommendation of the department provided they have done work equivalent to Year 2.
HIST.1.04
Not all programmes will necessarily be offered in any one year.
