NUL Hosts 2016 BOLESWA Intervarsity Games

The National University of Lesotho will host the 2016 BOLESWA Intervarsity Games from 13th to 18th March 2016.The games will involve 2100 participants from the three universities of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland.In an interview, NUL Dean of Student Affairs (DSA), Mr. Roland Mokoma emphasized that NUL is prepared to participate in all the twenty-seven sporting codes.


“We expect the best display of sportsmanship from all participants. I urge NUL students to strive to be champions, bring back the highest number of gold medals and refrain from engaging in risky behaviour”.Students will be competing in twenty-seven (27) sport codes including Soccer (ladies and gents), Netball, Volleyball (ladies and gents), Basketball (ladies and gents), Athletics, Swimming, Badminton (ladies and gents), Chess, Cricket (ladies and gents), Dance sport, Darts, Karate, Moot Court, Pool, Rugby, Squash, Table Tennis, Tennis (ladies and gents) Taekwondo, Weightlifting, Mr. and Miss Intervarsity pageants, Aerobics, and Choral Music.


The competitions will kick start with Choral Music and Mr. and Miss Intervarsity pageants while a Cultural Day, marked by food tasting, will take place on the last day of the competitions.According to the DSA, Lesotho used to scoop the most gold medals becoming the overall winner or comes second with a notable exception of 2014 when Botswana came first with twenty-one gold medals and Lesotho came last with only five gold medals. He attributed this poor performance to logistical obstacles.Competitions will be officially opened by the Minister of Education and Training on the March 14th, 2016 and closed by the Minister of Gender, Youth, Sports and Recreation on 17th March 2016.


The Theme of the competitions is “Celebrating 70 Years of Creating Champions” resonating with the National University of Lesotho’s 70th Anniversary celebrations which started in April 2015.

The BOLESWA Intervarsity Games have a long history extending back to the times when NUL used to be the University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland (UBLS). It is characterized by student competitions in sporting activities.
