FACULTY REGULATIONS - FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE

GENERAL INFORMATION

 The Faculty of Agriculture, hereafter referred to as the Faculty, is constituted by four departments:

  1. Agricultural Economics and Extension (with Consumer Sciences and Hospitality Unit)
  2. Animal Science
  3. Crop Science
  4. Soil Science and Resource Conservation.

The Faculty offers courses for study leading to award of Diploma in specialized areas, undergraduate degrees in various disciplines in agriculture and in consumer sciences and postgraduate degrees (M.Sc. and PhD) in various fields of agriculture.

 

PHILOSOPHY

The curriculum lays strong emphasis on agricultural production, coupled with agribusiness and management.  It is so designed that a wide spectrum of courses is studied to provide a broad background of in-depth theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for a sound understanding of general agricultural practices, consumer sciences and specialized areas in agriculture.

 

The training programme is, thus, broad-based, practical, functional and sufficiently flexible to make it relevant to the needs of Lesotho and the wider environment not only in the core agricultural and home management sectors, but also in other sectors of the economy.

 

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the Faculty are as follows:

 

Production of graduates at degree and sub-degree levels who should be able to accomplish the following:

 

Effectively engage in agricultural production, research, education and extension services that would provide relevant and appropriate solutions to agricultural and development problems and improve agricultural productivity and better nutrition in the country and beyond.

 

Profitably put their acquired knowledge and skills into operation by establishing and managing their own farms, home management-based business and other agro-allied enterprises, thereby becoming self-employing, as well as generating employment for other people.

 

Undertake graduate and postgraduate training in their chosen field of agriculture and consumer sciences anywhere in the world, so as to be better equipped to serve national as well as international needs in these areas of specialization. 

 

Localisation of training at various degree levels, thereby conserving badly needed foreign exchange hitherto expended on overseas training.

 

Serving as an effective instrument for the implementation of the policies of government in all areas of agriculture, food security and human nutrition, including other facets of the economy, thereby contributing effectively towards overall national development.

 

FACULTY REGULATIONS

 

Preamble

These regulations should be read in conjunction with the general academic regulations of the National University of Lesotho, hereafter referred to as General Academic Regulations.

 

These regulations are in respect of different programmes offered by the Faculty.  The appropriate degree/diploma will be awarded to a student upon the successful completion of study in an approved programme within the Faculty in accordance with these regulations.

 

Definition of Terms

Course: It is defined as a separate teachable and examinable component in a programme in the Department.  Departments may be designated courses as core courses, pre-requisites, compulsory, elective or optional courses.

 

Core Course:  It is a course which is considered to be essential for qualification in a particular programme and it must be passed prior to graduation unless it is prerequisite to another course in which case it must be passed in a given year.

 

Pre-requisite Course:  It is a course which a student must pass in order to register in a particular course.

 

Compulsory Course:  It is a course that must be taken and passed in a given year of study as part of the study programme.  It is considered to give a student additional relevant knowledge in his/her field of training.  If it is not prerequisite to a subsequent course, it may be fulfilled in subsequent registration before graduation.

 

Elective Course:  It is a course which a student may take from a list of courses stipulated by the Department to fill the required minimum number of credit hours in the study programme and/or enhance the student‚s interdisciplinary knowledge.  When used to fill the required minimum number of credit hours per academic year a minimum required number of elective credit hours must be passed.

 

Optional Course:  It is a course which a student may take to enhance his/her interdisciplinary knowledge.

 

Laboratory/Practical Course:  It is a course in which a student is required to carry out a set number of prescribed laboratories and/or field practical.

In the regulations, a two-hour tutorial or a three-hour practical class shall be regarded as equivalent to one credit hour.

 

Research Project Course:  It is a course in which a student is required to carry out an independent study and/or investigations related to a particular topic within a subject.  The work shall be carried out under the supervision of a member of academic staff and delegated member of the specified institution for that period when necessary.

 

Field Practical Training Course:  It is a course in which a student is required to work in some specified institution for a specified period for purposes of gaining field experience.  The student shall work under the supervision of a member of academic staff and delegated member of the specified institution for that period.  In addition students may be required to attend some study tours during the course of registration.

 

Seminar Course:  It is a course in which a student is required to conduct a literature review (to research) the prescribed number of topics in his/her field of study and then give seminar presentations in a class.  The audience shall be determined from time to time by the course coordinator.  This course shall be assessed solely on the presentations and/or submitted reports as may be determined by the Department with the advice from the course coordinator.  NO end of semester/year written examination will be taken for this course.

 

Programmes

 

Undergraduate Sub-degree Programmes

The Faculty also offers a three-year Diploma Programme in Animal Health and Production.

 

The Faculty may, from time to time, offer other specialized programmes at sub-degree levels (Diploma/Certificate/Short courses).

 

Undergraduate Degree Programmes

 

The Faculty offers the following BSc. Agriculture degree programmes and BSc. Consumer Sciences, with duration of three years after completion of the First Year (Agric) of the NUL or its recognized equivalent or recognized Diploma in Agriculture and Diploma in Home Economics qualifications, respectively or their recognized equivalents.  There are six (6) BSc. Agriculture programme options:

B.Sc. Agriculture ‚ Agricultural Extension 

B.Sc. Agriculture ‚ Animal Science

B.Sc. Agriculture ‚ Crop Science 

B.Sc. Agriculture ‚ Soil Science.

 

Graduate Studies Degree Programmes

The Faculty offers graduate level training leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees with or without course work options. The duration of a M.Sc. degree is normally two years while the Ph.D. degree normally takes three to four years.

 

All graduate programmes are regulated by the respective Departments.

 

Minimum Admission Requirements for Undergraduate Degree Programmes.

 

Admission for Diploma Programme

In order to be considered for admission into the Diploma programme, prospective candidates must normally possess at least one of the following categories of qualification.

  • PASS in COSC with Credit in Mathematics
  • Pass in English Language
  • At least one Science subject (Biology, Physics, Combined Science, Chemistry, Agricultural Science and Additional Combined Science).
  • A PASS from certificate in Agriculture or an equivalent certificate qualification with a minimum of credit from an institution recognized by NUL.
  • A PASS from Secondary Teachers Certificate with a minimum of Second Division and Agriculture as a major subject from an institution recognized by NUL.

 

 Admission for Undergraduate Degree Programmes

The following regulations shall be read together with General Academic Regulations AR2.05 to AR2.17.

In order to qualify for admission into the Common First Year BSc Agriculture leading to BSc Agriculture option programmes and BSc Consumer Sciences, applicants must have: 

  • Passed the COSC examination or its recognized equivalent with a Credit in mathematics and in at least one approved Science subject (approved Science subjects include physics, Chemistry, Biology, Physical science and the combination of combined Science and additional combined Science).
  • Obtained a COSC grade of at least D or 7 or equivalent in English Language.

 

When ranking applicants for admissibility into the Faculty of Agriculture, the Admissions Committee shall consider only the grades in Mathematics, an approved science subject and the better of: 

  • Agricultural Science
  • Home Economics
  • Geography
  • English Language
  • Any additional approved Science subject. 

 

Admission/Promotion into Second Year

In order to be considered for admission/promotion into second year of the B.Sc. Agriculture (general and options programmes) and B.Sc. Consumer Sciences, prospective candidates must normally possess at least one of the following categories of qualifications:

 

  • A PASS (an overall weighted average (OWM) of at least 50% (D)) from B.Sc. Agriculture Year I examinations plus at least a D grade (50%) in Biology and Chemistry and at least an average of E (40‚49%) in Mathematics courses.  Students are also required to have passed (50%) in Agriculture core courses offered in B.Sc. Agriculture Year I.

 

  • A PASS (an overall weighted average (OWM) of at least 50% (D)) from Common B.Sc. Year I or related programme examinations plus at least a D grade (50%) in Biology and Chemistry and at least an average of E (40‚49%) in Mathematics courses.

 

  • At least Credit in Diploma in General Agriculture, Agricultural Education, Forestry and Resource Management, Home Economics and other agriculture related diplomas obtained from an institution recognized by NUL.

 

  • Second Division of Secondary Teachers Certificate with Agriculture as a major subject.

 

  • Any other qualification that may be approved by the Senate of the National University of Lesotho from time to time.

 

Candidates who qualify through the Diploma in Agriculture, Diploma in Forestry or Diploma in Agricultural Education shall be required to take and pass mathematics for non‚mathematics majors during their second year of study.

 

All the students of the Faculty shall be required to pass the English (CSS101‚6) and computer science (CS2310‚3) before they proceed to their final year of study (Fourth Year).

 

Graduate Studies

In order to be considered for admission into the MSc degree programmes, candidates must have achieved a minimum pass of Second Class Second Division in BSc Agriculture degree examinations or equivalent qualification recognized by the Department.

 

Candidates for the PhD degrees must have a minimum of MSc Agriculture degree from NUL or any recognized institution.

 

These regulations shall be read together with the Departmental regulations for graduate studies specified in their respective Student Handbooks.

 

Examination Regulations for Years II, III and IV of Undergraduate Degree Programmes

 

General Examination Regulation.

Students in the various programmes of the Faculty shall take courses in progressive tiers from the second to the fourth (final) year as the case may be.  However, students may have the option of adding a limited number of deferred courses to courses in the next higher tier, but only, and in conformity with Faculty regulations in this regard.  This regulation does not apply to 100 ‚ level courses, which merely represent entry requirements into the 2nd year of the various options in BSc Agricultural programmes and Consumer Sciences programme.

 

Students shall normally be required to take a minimum of 18 or a maximum of 24 credit hours per semester, provided that no student shall normally be permitted to carry a total load of more than 48 credit hours in any given academic year.

 

All courses in the Faculty: Core, Compulsory, Elective, Optional, Practical, Seminar and Research project for the undergraduate degree and sub-degree programmes (as opposed to service courses) are guided by the Faculty Regulations.

 

Core and Compulsory courses must be taken and passed except where exemption is granted.

 

Elective and Optional courses taken to fill the credit hours to minimum load must also be passed before the student graduates.

 

All students are required to attend all prescribed laboratory practical, field practical, seminars, excursion and attachment programmes, and are strongly advised to attend all lectures.

 

Course Assessment 

All courses offered during any given semester should be examined at the end of the semester.

 

Continuous Assessment (which may take the form of mid-semester tests, laboratory reports, term papers, presentations (seminars), etc.) shall account for 40% of the final grade in each course examined while the main examination shall account for 60%.

 

Practical courses like Seminar or Field Practical Training courses are assessed solely on continuous assessments (seminar presentations or reports, respectively).

 

All student projects (AGR444, CPS444, ANS444, SSR444, AEC444, AEX444 and CSC444) shall be submitted by the last day of lectures of the academic year.  Students who do not meet this deadline may submit the work as supplementary examinations.

 

Award of Grades

Final examination grades shall be calculated as OVERALL WEIGHTED MEAN (OWM) and awarded on a six-point letter scale as follows:

Grades E and F mean Fail.  However, the grade E is supplementable.

 

Failure in a Course

A student shall be deemed to have failed a course if s/he has obtained a FAIL grade in final examination for that course.

 

A FAIL grade E (40-49%) can be redeemed either by taking and passing a supplementary examination in the failed course, or where feasible, by RE-TAKING the course and thereafter re-taking and passing the examination in that course.  However, an F grade (below 40%) in a course (except for the elective or optional course which does not affect the minimum credit hour load) is not supplementable and re-take is mandatory.

 

Supplementary Examinations

  • Supplementary examinations for courses failed during any semester shall normally be given before the beginning of the next academic year.

 

  • Students shall only be allowed to take supplementary examinations in course(s) where an E grade is obtained and if the OWM is at least 50%.

 

  • No students shall be allowed to take supplementary examinations for total credit hours exceeding 16.

 

  • Irrespective of the score obtained at a supplementary examination, the candidate shall be awarded a maximum of 59% (D+) in each course passed at this examination.  In calculating the supplementary mark, coursework shall count as in the ordinary course assessment.

 

  • No students shall normally be permitted to take a supplementary examination in the same course more than once in a year.

 

Supplementation ‚under‚ SIT condition:

A student, who, for a reason that is acceptable to Senate, absents him/herself from an examination, shall be permitted to ‚sit‚ for the missed course/courses during the supplementary/re-sit examinations.  Such a student shall be regarded as having taken a supplementation under a ‚SIT‚ condition and the posted grade shall be the actual obtained at this examination.  If the student fails any course or courses at this ‚SIT‚ examination s/he shall be permitted to repeat the failed course or courses the following year subject to University/Faculty regulation.

 

Re-take of Courses

The following categories of students shall be permitted or required to re-take course(s) and examination(s), provided that the total number of credit hours to be carried by the student during any academic year shall not exceed 48 credit hours:

 

  • A student who scores an F grade (below 40%) in one or more courses.

 

  • A student who fails in one or more courses examined during any semester and who qualifies for, but opts not to take supplementary examination.  Such a student shall be required to re-take the course/courses and be examined in them during the next semester/academic year when the course/courses will be offered.A student who fails a supplementary or ‚sit‚ examination in one or more courses.

 

  • Where a student re-takes a course, the posted grade shall be that scored at the re-take examination.



  • No student shall be permitted to re-take a course more than seven times. 

 

 

No Proceed ‚ Must repeat course(s) or the year

  • A student who has obtained an overall weighted year mean of at least 50% but failed in one or more courses at a normal/supplementary examination without the possibility of re-taking the failed course or courses in the next year of study/graduating shall normally be recommended to repeat course(s) before proceeding to the next year of study/graduating.

 

  • A student who has obtained an overall weighted year mean of at least 50% but failed in one or more courses at a normal/supplementary examination and the failed course(s) carry a total credit hour load exceeding 16 shall normally be recommended to repeat the year of study.

 

Fail and Repeat Year of Study

A student shall normally be required to repeat a year of study if the overall weighted year mean is between 45 ‚ 49%.

 

Discontinue from the Programmes

The following categories of students who do not fulfil all the requirements to pass a programme as stipulated shall be discontinued from the programme.

 

  • A student who obtains an OWM between 30 and 44%.
  • A student who fails to complete any one degree programme in 14 semesters after his/her first registration for that programme in the Faculty.
  • A student who fails to complete any one diploma programme in 12 semesters after his/her first registration for that programme in the Faculty.

 

Withdrawal from the Programmes.

Withdrawals from the Programme/Faculty/University shall be governed by the University General Regulations under AR9.00.

 

Statement of Results

At the end of every academic year, each student shall be issued with a statement of results indicating the letter grade performance in each course examined.

 

Recognition

  • A student who is considered to have excelled in his/her subject(s) at the end of any academic year shall be placed in the Dean‚s Honour List.  Such a student shall have passed all the courses in that year and obtained the weighted year mean of at least 80%.

 

  • Special prizes may be awarded to students with the best academic performance or academic performance and social behaviour in certain years of study or courses.  Such students shall have obtained the weighted average of at least 70% in that year.  However, no student will be considered for a prize in any particular academic year unless s/he obtains a minimum of 70% or more in at least 50% of the courses and had not failed in any of the courses in a year.

 

Weightage of Yearly Contribution of Student‚s Work towards the Final Degree/Diploma

All years of study shall have equal weightage for the purposes of computing the final results.  However, 100-level courses, which represent entry requirements for degree programmes shall not be taken into consideration in this regard.

 

Graduation Requirements

  • A candidate shall be awarded an undergraduate degree/sub-degree diploma if and only if s/he has obtained at least a pass (D) in each and every stipulated course (except for the elective or optional course which does not affect the minimum credit hour load) in their respective programme of study.

 

  • All candidates irrespective of their programme shall have to fulfil requirements for Field Practical Training prior to graduation.

 

Final Results Classification

 

The overall degree classification shall be in accordance with provision of the general academic regulations AR6.12.

 

The overall results for Diploma shall be classified as follows:

Pass with Distinction75% and above

Pass with Credit            60 ‚ 74%

Pass 50 ‚ 59%

Fail49% and below
