Human resource remains the cornerstone of any health system and, unless manpower development is adequate for a nation, people`s and the environment`s health needs become compromised, and the people generally become non achievers, both socially and economically.


The Faculty of Health Sciences (FoHS), the youngest Faculty of the NUL, houses 4 departments, viz- Nursing, Pharmacy, Environmental Health & Nutrition. Through these four departments, the Faculty produces Health Manpower necessary for the delivery of health services throughout the country of Lesotho. Globally, issues pertaining to health workforce are high in the agenda.  Emerging health problems such as HIV/AIDS and chronic illness have increased the demand for qualified health care professionals, and the FOHS is working hard to satisfy manpower demand. 


The FoHS, among other things, addresses the following:

Through Nursing Department: Globally issues pertaining to health workforce are high on the agenda.  Emerging health problems such as HIV/AIDS and chronic illnesses have increased the demand for qualified health care professionals.  In the developing countries like Lesotho, this is translated into the labour migration from South to North (the developing countries).  The movement is more pronounced among nurses and the government of Lesotho has not been able to resolve this issue.  This has resulted in decline in the provision of quality health care in all health care settings (primary healthcare, community and hospitals).


Through Pharmacy Department: There is a high shortage of qualified professional pharmacists in the country, and NUL is the only institution that produces pharmacists in Lesotho.  Therefore, the existence of this department is of great importance in provision of pharmacy health care services through hospital pharmacy and community pharmacy.  In addition to providing health care to patients, the pharmacists are playing a greater role in drug regulation, administration, academia, drug manufacturing, drug supply chain management and quality control of medicinal substances.


Through Environmental Health Department: The FoHS, through the Dept of Environmental Health, addresses issues of the sustainability of Planet Earth, and directly impacts positively on the livelihoods of the Basotho and other country residents, through Environmental & Health Engineering (Quantitative & Applied) interventions. It has important collaborations with the Ministry of Health (MoH) & the Lesotho Revenue Authority (LRA), where it stands as an advisory body.



Through Nutrition Department: Nutrition is a science based discipline. In the National university of Lesotho Nutrition studies cover four areas which are Basic Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, Community Nutrition and Food Science. There are plans to introduce Dietetics.


The FoHS, through the Dept of Nutrition, addresses dietary issues of Lesotho, a country that harbors mostly very poor malnourished inhabitants. It has become critical in addressing issues in HIV/AIDS, diabetes, as well as other chronic illness` management. In fact, nutrition has become even more important now that Lesotho, like its counterparts in the developing world is experiencing a nutritional transition in which we are burdened by both infectious and non-communicable diseases.


The Faculty of Health Sciences stands as the unit of accreditation (Centre for Evaluation) of Health Science programmes in the country. There are numerous health training institutions that are affiliated to the NUL through the Faculty, and whose results are brought to the FoHS for evaluation. Compared to any other Faculty, the FoHS has by far the most affiliates



To be a nationally and internationally recognized leader in health education, research and community service, committed to producing health professionals who are able to meet the health needs of the country.



Within the Mission of the NUL, and to support its values and vision, The Mission of the Faculty of Health Sciences shall be:

“To facilitate, promote and enhance the healthcare delivery system of Lesotho through the education and training of competent, responsible and accountable healthcare professionals who will provide adequate and relevant services, including HIV/AIDS treatment and care, in the spirit of equity and social justice, and will also find solutions to the health needs of Lesotho through problem-oriented research.”
