THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF LESOTHO
INTERNAL VACANCY
DEPARTMENT – ACADEMIC
RESPONSIBLE TO PRO-VICE CHANCELLOR
NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF LESOTHO
DIRECTOR - POSTGRADUATE STUDIES, RESEARCH AND INNOVATION (DPSRI): POST NO. (New)
- BACKGROUND
In 2015, the National University of Lesotho (hereinafter referred to as the University or NUL) adopted an ambitious Strategic Plan 2015-2020 with seven cardinal goals in mind. Among them is to become a medium-sized dual mode university in the service of the country and Africa. Among its prime objectives under this goal is to significantly expand the University’s postgraduate footprint, which would in turn promote research. The University’s plan is to become a research-driven institution contributing to humankind’s advancement. To achieve this goal, the NUL committed itself to enhance the pursuit of research by its academics in both basic and applied knowledge and significantly expand the postgraduate footprint. The objective of this goal is to increase research output and thereby promote research in niche areas.
Since 2015, the University has introduced new and revived old postgraduate programmes in various areas across the faculties. New programmes are being developed for future implementation. One of the challenges affecting the University in the implementation of these goals is the lack of coordination of its research and postgraduate studies programmes. Whilst the University has managed to revive or introduce postgraduate programmes, these activities are spread out across faculties without central coordination to ensure proper governance, efficiency, accountability, and quality assurance.
Most Universities have a directorate that oversees coordination of research and postgraduate studies. To date, the NUL does not have a central office that oversees and coordinates research and postgraduate studies. To address its current challenges, NUL needs to follow what other institutions are doing and establish an executive position to be responsible for these activities. Thus, the University has decided to establish and appoint a Director - Postgraduate Studies, Research and Innovation to oversee the coordination of postgraduate studies, research and innovation.
