POST 2280 – URBAN PLANNING & DESIGN
LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/PROFESSOR
The Department of Geography & Environmental Science, within its Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning programme, wishes to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor/Professor in Urban Planning and Design. The post involves teaching and research supervision at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with potential for supervision of students up to PhD level in the near future. It also involves research and publications.
Interested candidates must be specialists in urban planning and design practice and be able to:
- Run lectures, seminars, studio-type teaching, design-oriented laboratories and co-manage the studio teams of Lecturers within and outside the Department, as well as guest lecturers;
- deliver urban design projects through technical and applied studio-based approaches;
- be teaching/deliver contextually responsive urban design interventions at multiple spatial scales;
- possess skills in using and delivering instructions in a wide range of urban design techniques and software in the development and delivery of design proposals.
- Do any other additional duties that may be assigned by the Department and/ or University.
As part of their application, all candidates should include an Urban Design Portfolio that demonstrates their appreciation of the urban design process and practice. The portfolio may be in the form of the candidate’s own design work and/or student work that the candidate has directly supervised [the applicant must clarify if portfolio is own work or supervised work]. The portfolio should provide clear evidence of the candidate’s technical skills in applied urban design techniques and application of relevant software programmes, technical drawing and hand/urban-sketching, urban design analysis, design development and proposals visualization and presentation skills. It should be presented in A3 landscape format and be a maximum of 12 pages – It must not exceed a file size limit of 20MB. Ensure that your respective role(s) in each project/page you present as part of your portfolio is sufficiently described.
Prospective applicants must possess a minimum of a Master’s degree in Urban Design or Planning or related field for a lecturer level; PhD is needed Supervisor. for Senior Lecturer/ Associate Professor and Full Professor levels. Urban design is a highly practical and skilled profession; therefore, a minimum of 2 years of practical professional experience or design and delivery of taught courses in urban design and landscape planning is essential. A PhD in urban design or planning will be an added advantage for a lecturer level. Applicants must clearly state in their covering letters the post position/ level that they are applying for.
